Inspired by the filmmakers’ own experiences as fathers, ‘Alike’ is heart-warming, animated short film directed by Daniel Martínez Lara and Rafa Cano Méndez. It depicts the relationship between a father (Copi) and son (Paste) in a colourless world of everyday drudgery. Each day as the pair head to school and work the vibrant whimsy of life recedes into insipid uniformity. But in this touching, 3D computer-animated tale, we see how they overcome the mundane to bring colour and creativity back into their lives.
The project began in 2010 with a budget of over £60,000 and took until 2015 to complete using free 3D animation application Blender. ‘Alike’ was featured in over 90 international film festivals and won over 50 awards including the Goya Best Animated Short Film award, in 2016. It was also nominated for the 2016 Cartoon d’Or. It was after this slew of success that its directors decided to release the short online, which has reached over 10 million plays on YouTube, Vimeo and social networks.
